Kakadu and Arnhem Land are a thrill seeker's paradise, with vast, rugged landscapes, plunging cascades and plenty of billabongs and rivers to tackle.
Pack up the 4WD and head out into your very own adventure playground. Kakadu National Park is a thrill seeker’s paradise, with vast, rugged landscapes, plunging cascades and plenty of billabongs and rivers to tackle. You’ll find something to get the adrenaline pumping no matter which direction you choose.
Off-road and on track
Join a guided 4WD tour across a network of rugged trails, or up the adventure stakes by taking the wheel yourself. Tracks of varying difficulty will test your driving skills and reward the intrepid with access to some of the most pristine land the Top End has to offer. Head off-road to spectacular Maguk Gorge and swim in crystal clear pools, or take the challenging track to iconic Jim Jim Falls to behold the majestic waterfall cascading against a red ochre backdrop.
One with nature
Why limit yourself to a day trip when you can sleep outdoors and wake to the sounds of native birds and wildlife? Established camping areas are dotted throughout the diverse regions of Kakadu, and often within range of great walking trails. Intrepid campers will find remote and scenic campsites within the park and around Arnhem Land accessible by 4WD only.
Water adventures
Cruise past ancient canyon walls and spot prehistoric crocodiles on the East Alligator River, or swim in one of Kakadu’s many designated natural rock pools. For high-flying thrills, take to the sky and witness the explosion of colour and life on the wet season floodplains. Always make sure you are croc-wise and only swim in areas where swimming is allowed.
Permits and planning
Even adventurers need to plan ahead. Advance permits are required to enter Arnhem Land – apply through the Northern Land Council (1800 645 299) – and for some camping spots in Kakadu. Be mindful of the season – 4WD tracks are best tackled from April to September only.
