Head out on a daytime or sunset river cruise, launch a boat or hire a canoe for the day. Encounter native birds and animals, and witness the area’s astounding and unique geological formations. Cast a line for a giant barramundi, swim in thermal springs and beneath gushing cascades, and camp on sandy river banks. Don’t forget to watch for crocs.

Katherine plays a significant role as a meeting place for indigenous peoples. Gain insight into Aboriginal history and culture in the town’s museums and galleries. Try your hand at traditional crafts in a cultural festival, and tour an Aboriginal community to learn about bush medicine, bush tucker, and watch local artists at work. Throughout the regions’ national parks, you can trace incredible Dreamtime stories in ancient rock art.

Live like a local

Be sure not to miss Katherine’s popular and quirky festivals and events. Spend the day mingling with the locals at a music muster, Goldrush festival, rodeo meet, or get involved with the annual canoe marathon. Sample fresh, local produce at the community market, and pick up a craft souvenir to take back home. Rest up with a beverage and meal at one of the local pubs for a true Territory dining experience.
