Things to do

The Northern Territory is unlike any place on earth; its not a place you visit just to take a look around, its a place to immerse yourself and be free.

In the Territory you have to smell the fresh air as the sunrises over the West MacDonnell Ranges, taste fresh for the first time eating a mud crab caught that day, hear stories over 65,000 years old, see breathtaking horizons from the top of a Kakadu escarpment or get in touch with history by seeing Aboriginal rock art.

The Territory gives you the freedom to explore and to get away. If you are heading to Darwin treat your tastebuds and indulge your sense of fun and adventure in the Territory's tropical capital city. Darwin is world famous for its fabulous food, colourful outdoor markets and diverse bag of adventure activities.

In Alice Springs you can explore a thriving, spirited outback centre, famous for the personality of its locals and contemporary and traditional art as the natural wonders, including the Larapinta Trail and the East and West MacDonnell Ranges that surround the town.

Or visit one of the great natural wonders of the world, Uluru/Ayers Rock. Not only a spectacular natural formation but a deeply spiritual place. You can feel a powerful presence the moment you first set eyes on it. Choose to walk with a traditional owner, join a camel tour, self-drive or dine under a canopy of stars, there's lots to see and do, and something to suit everyone.

We're coming to you from turquoise paradise... otherwise known as Bitter Springs 💙 This slice of heaven is located in Elsey National Park, an hour south of #Katherine. You can rent a foam pool noodle from the local caravan park to help keep you afloat as you drift through the crystal clear water, before hopping out at the ladder and heading back to the beginning to do it all over again! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @mrsreginapreston. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

@emilyyyland captured this glorious shot of #Uluru and #KataTjuta (in the distance!) on a #sunrise helicopter flight 🚁 She described the experience as a “real illustration of just how big this ancient rock really is!" There’s a helicopter tour to suit every traveller, including short, day-long, sunrise or sunset experiences with @professional_helicopters or @ayersrockhelicopters. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, Emily! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

You don't have to travel far to get your nature fix in @TourismTopEnd! 🍃 Located only 40 minutes north of #Katherine in Nitmiluk National Park, Edith Falls (Leliyn) is a water lovers paradise 💙 The upper pool is the epitome of wild swimming with cool cascades and pretty bush land surrounds - well worth the 2.6km loop walk! With a grassy campground and kiosk onsite, there's every reason to stick around and enjoy this gorgeous location. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @__kiarajade. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

*Pinch*...yep, it's a real place! The #KingsCanyon Rim Walk is full of surprises, particularly the 'Lost City', best described as a series of sandstone domes resembling structures you might have found in an ancient city 🙌 This sometimes challenging, but spectacular hike is 6 kilometres in length and has it all when it comes to epic scenery! Be sure to come prepared with an empty camera roll! 📸 Set in Watarrka National Park, Kings Canyon can be found roughly halfway between #AliceSprings and #Uluru. Our thoughts go out to our interstate and international mates, particularly in Victoria, at this tough time. While many of you can't travel right now, we're committed to bringing you a daily dose of vitamin-NT and brightening your feed with wide open spaces, World Heritage-listed National Parks, waterfalls and swimming holes. And one day, hopefully sometime soon, you can come and see it for yourself 💛 @_aswewander recently packed up their troopy and hit the road west of #AliceSprings, stopping at 2 Mile, a firm favourite with locals 🏕 The 2 Mile campground can be found on the banks of the Finke River near Glen Helen Gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges. While there are no toilets or fancy cooking facilities, this is free bush #camping at its finest...not only will you be surrounded by rolling mountain ranges, but you'll also be laying your head next to one of the oldest river systems in the world. Local tip: you'll need a 4WD to access this spot! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, Luke and Jess. #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

Set in the towering escarpment country of #Kakadu National Park, they say Jim Jim Falls is so nice that they named it twice 😜 Boasting a sheer 200m drop, crystal clear waters and a white sandy beach, Jim Jim offers one of the most unique swimming experiences in @Australia. In the dry season the falls stop running and you can hike into the heart of the gorge and sit in the shadow of these spectacular cliffs. The 2 kilometre return walk is graded as moderately difficult, but rest assured, you'll be well rewarded for your efforts! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @nickwillox.  #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #SeeKakadu

When they tell you the NT is just one big desert 🤣 #Litchfield National Park is full of hidden gems but this heavenly spot has to be one of its brightest! Say 👋 to Tjaynera/Sandy Creek Falls! Located just 1.4 kilometres from the carpark, Sandy Creek was made for days filled with life's simple pleasures... kicking back with a good book, a cool dip or a stroll through the monsoon forest. These falls are accessible by 4WD vehicle only, making them an idyllic spot for a quiet camping weekend filled with frolicking in the clear waters of the plunge pool. There's no shortage of gorge-ous views at Ormiston Gorge in @visitcentralaus 😍 Located in the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges near #AliceSprings, Ormiston is well known for its permanent freshwater swimming hole and epic towering red walls. While the water is a bit chilly over the winter months, it's the perfect time for getting out on one of the many hiking trails in the area, including the Pound and Ghost Gum walks. Nature therapy at its very best 🙌 Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @cedalisemariotti. #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT
