The essential NT road-trip: #AliceSprings to the #DevilsMarbles (#KarluKarlu) 🙌 A drive through our country’s heart is one every Australian should make! The Devils Marbles are piles of huge, and some not so huge, red and orange-coloured granite boulders, which look as though they’ve been dropped in the middle of the outback. In 1870, while surveying for the Overland Telegraph line, surveyor John Ross named the boulders the “Devils Marbles”, stating “This is the Devil’s country; he’s even emptied his bag of marbles around the place!” They're known as Karlu Karlu to the traditional owners – the Warumungu, Kaytetye, Alyawarra and Warlpiri people, which translates to 'round boulders'. These formations come into their own at sunrise and sunset, when the soft light illuminates the changing colours of the granite, transforming them from stunning pinks to bright reds. Stay overnight at the bush campground or alternatively, you can find Devils Marbles Hotel 8 kilometres down the road. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @ettas_travels! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

Located only 90 kilometres west of #AliceSprings, Ellery Creek Big Hole sits within the West MacDonnell National Park/Tjoritja, an adventure-filled area right on the doorstep of Australia's unofficial outback capital. The park stretches for 161 kilometres and is an incredible example of an ancient landscape sculptured over time by the climatic elements - so, expect to be wowed by the scenery! This pretty outback swimming hole is known for its high red cliffs, large waterhole and sandy creek surrounded by gums. While it's possible to take in much of the region on a day-trip, there are plenty of campgrounds if you're keen to stay longer, along with motel-style accommodation at nearby @glenhelenlodge. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @jade_elise_collins! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

What if we told you that this epic spot is only 15 minutes' drive from #AliceSprings? Shaded by towering cliffs and ghost gums, Simpsons Gap is the first of many stops along the West MacDonnell Ranges. Water flows through a small gap in the ranges providing a sheltered haven for a range of native wildlife like the resident black footed rock wallabies. There's a handful of walking trails, all varying in length, for those looking to explore more, or alternatively you can simply just sit and enjoy the view. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @jarradseng! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

There's no need to leave the bath to catch a glorious sunset at @KingsCanyon Resort 😍 Just a few hours drive from Uluru and only three and a half hours from #AliceSprings, #KingsCanyon is known for its sheer sandstone cliffs, spectacular walking trails and epic outback surrounds. Quietly blending into the surrounding terrain, the resort is just 8 kilometres from the canyon itself. After a big day exploring, the Deluxe Spa rooms are ideal for soaking in the oversized tub and gazing out over the rocky escarpment. Ormiston Gorge is like that one annoying over-achieving classmate you had in school that was literally good at everything (you know who you are!) 😜 Seriously, look at this snap from @jade_elise_collins! This freshwater oasis is located in the West MacDonnell Ranges and is only a 1.5 hour drive from #AliceSprings. It's the ultimate day trip and only one of many incredible stops in the national park. You could easily spend the day here or explore some other swimming spots such as Ellery Creek Big Hole, Redbank Gorge or Glen Helen Gorge. In the wintertime the water is on the cooler side but the view is still worth a visit and there are plenty of walking trails to be explored. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, Jade! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

As far as rail journeys go, they don't get much better than #TheGhan! A unique and awe-inspiring experience, you'll explore the wonders of the country's diverse interior in style and comfort on a 2,979 kilometre journey from #Darwin to Adelaide. Known for its iconic place in Australian history and strong connection to the vast landscape, The Ghan is currently celebrating 90 years of outback adventure 🤠 Having been in operation since 1929, its conception and construction is an epic tale of pioneering endurance. At this time of year, @journeybeyondrail runs The Ghan Expedition over three nights (as opposed to the usual two) with excursions in #Katherine, #AliceSprings and Coober Pedy. @jarradseng and @thehatchling recently embarked on the southbound journey - check out our story to see more of the highlights! #NTaustralia #JourneyBeyond

The outback is calling... 🧡 A visit to Simpsons Gap, near #AliceSprings, is a great way to experience the rugged landscape of the West  MacDonnell Ranges. Areas of white sand, huge river eucalyptus trees, and white-barked ghost gums lead to a permanent waterhole in the shelter of rugged cliffs, which are particularly impressive as the sun starts to go down. Nearby walking trails will take you to quiet spots where rock wallabies appear in the early morning and late afternoon, and Cassia Hill offers excellent views of the Larapinta valley. A 24 kilometre hike from Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Simpsons Gap marks the first section of the famous Larapinta Trail, one of Australia's most famous outback walks. The area is an important spiritual site to the Aranda Aboriginal people, where several dreaming stories cross.  Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @jarradseng! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT
