If you're travelling through the West MacDonnell Ranges, don't forget to stop by Standley Chasm, where the rock appears to have been split by a giant pick-axe! A relatively short and easy drive from #AliceSprings, the chasm cuts through the tough quartzite to form a natural alleyway. Thousands of years' worth of surging flood waters are responsible for this beautiful site, which is best seen around noon on a sunny day when the high walls light up 🌟 Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @grants_abroad! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

Weekends = camping! With the weather starting to cool down in #RedCentreNT, we're pulling out the map and loading up the four-wheel drive 🚗⛺️️️️️ The only tricky part is picking out of all the awesome camping spots around #AliceSprings... there's plenty of options in the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, or you can head south to Rainbow Valley or Chambers Pillar. For the adventurous, there's also Palm Valley or Owen Springs Reserve. Not only can you expect an outback style campsite, you'll also be sleeping under some of the best night skies in the world! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @boenferguson.  #SeeAustralia

Mount Sonder marks the western end of the #LarapintaTrail, a 223km walking trail that extends from #AliceSprings. Standing at the top, there's almost nothing man-made in sight - it's a view that strikes many silent! Sonder stands 1380m high and it’s possible to climb to the summit via a good trail. For many, the first view of the mountain comes while driving through the West MacDonnell Ranges along the Namatjira Highway, with the landmark appearing as a misty blue peak on the horizon. Massive geological forces created the towering red walls of Ormiston Gorge and Pound, located within the West MacDonnell National Park, 135 kilometres west of #AliceSprings. The best way to describe the ‘Pound’ is as a huge amphitheatre surrounded by hills and ridges 🙌 The 7km long Pound walk takes you on a full circuit from the visitor centre across the rocky slopes, onto the flat floor of the pound and returns along the gorge via the main waterhole. Whether you're just looking for a day walk or are hiking the more challenging Larapinta Trail, we guarantee this spectacular trail will take your breath away 😍 Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @_itsbeautifulhere! #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT

The #LarapintaTrail is one of @Australia's finest walks, situated just out of #AliceSprings and spanning 223kms across the West MacDonnell Ranges. This long distance walking track is divided into 12 sections that each take one or two days to walk. Described by @AustralianGeographic as "one of the world's best long-distance arid-zone walks", this spectacular desert trek traverses the ridgelines of the mountain ranges from east to west. From the big blue skies that offer a stunning contrast against the sunburned landscape of the ranges, to some of the most spectacular geological formations in the region, this trail truly showcases the diversity of the Red Centre. #Uluru, is that you? Nup, it's #MountConner! This mysterious monolith fools a lot of visitors driving up from #AliceSprings, who spot it on the horizon 100 kilometres east of Uluru. After a surge of excitement, they soon realise that this rock actually looks quite different from Uluru's famous silhouette! Locals call it 'Fool-uru' 😜 If you're keen to see it up close, you can join a tour with @CurtinSprings, the owners of the surrounding cattle station. Where can you get one of the best views in #AliceSprings, you ask? From a hot air balloon, of course! Take in the changing colours on a sunrise flight with @outback_ballooning as you float high over the outback 👌 On most days you'll be able to spot wildlife down below, particularly red kangaroos, in their natural environment. Your balloon experience will finish with a glass of sparkling in the middle of the bush with some yummy baked goods 😎 What a way to start the day! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @jeffcolhoun. #SeeAustralia #RedCentreNT
