Katherine & Surrounds

Map showing the Katherine and Surrounds region in the NT

Come to where the Outback meets the tropics and discover a region full of gorges and misty waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures.

Nature comes alive at Katherine Gorge as you cruise, canoe or fly along the Gorge by helicopter. Take a more challenging route and hike the Jatbula Trail, or soak it up in luxury at Cicada Lodge.

Learn from the land at Tom Curtain’s Katherine Outback Experience or get a hands-on perspective of indigenous culture with the Top Didj Aboriginal Cultural Experience; both just minutes from the centre of Katherine.

We’re coming to you from Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge on one of our favourite days of the year - #TerritoryDay! Territory Day marks the NT achieving self-government on 1 July, 1978. It’s also a chance to celebrate the Territory’s amazing backyard, larrikin locals and laidback lifestyle 🌴☀️ Talk about perfect timing – guess what landed on Netflix today? @topendweddingmovie! 💍 Starring our very own @misstap! If you’re thinking about a trip to the Top End, this 2019 movie will well and truly have you packing your bags. Open year round, the Katherine region is home to some of the most stunning gorge scenery in the NT. Consisting of 13 separate gorges, this maze of waterways stretches for 12 kilometres and extends more than 70 metres high. Our tip: Check out Pat's Lookout for spectacular views of the first gorge! Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @shall.be.better. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd

Sometimes, it's just best to go with the flow 💦 Bitter Springs, an hour south of #Katherine, lies tucked inside the frond-filled Elsey National Park. If ever there were a ‘wild swim’, this would be it. Adventurous? Check. Off the beaten track? Check. These winding hot springs are so beautiful that they could easily be described as blue-and-emerald heaven on earth. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @ally.photog. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

Our thoughts go out to NT tourism operators, locals and travellers at this uncertain time. We’d like to think our account is special, it’s run by locals who believe their Territory backyard is pretty awesome. For now, we’re going to keep posting, because one day, once this is all over, we hope you can come and experience it for yourself. In the meantime, sit back, take a break and enjoy the view 💚 This beautiful seasonal swimming hole can be found in Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge. Southern Rockhole is accessible via an 8 kilometre (return) walking trail or by ferry with @nitmiluktours. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @beckymewburn! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

How's the serenity? 💦 #Mataranka’s crystal-clear thermal pool, surrounded by paperbark and palm forest, can be found in Elsey National Park, an hour south of #Katherine. The warm turquoise water, dappled by light filtered through overhanging pandanus, is said to be the ultimate remedy for aches and pains. After floating your worries away, be sure to spend a few days in the @VisitKatherine region, exploring the nearby Nitmiluk National Park. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @chechorleyphoto! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #HolidayHereThisYear
