If you’re looking for a place to get away – The Northern Territory’s Cobourg Peninsula is almost 2,000 square kilometres of mostly uninhabited coastline, so you’ll definitely find a fishing or camping spot to yourself.

On the western tip of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Cobourg Peninsula is a wild and untamed landscape, home to not only some of the world’s best reef and tropical sports fishing locations the Northern Territory’s largest marine park – but sandy beaches, coastal mangroves, rainforest patches, lagoons, and coral reefs. It truly is nature’s wonderland.

Things to see & do around Cobourg Peninsula

The Garig Gunak Barlu National Park encompasses most of this remote peninsula, and to experience it you’ll need to sail 150 nautical miles from Darwin, or drive approximately two or three days by road. Access is via four-wheel drive only between May and October, and it’s a perfect trip to complete after visiting Kakadu National Park. Make sure you have a permit from the Northern Land Council, plenty of fuel, enough water and food, and a satellite phone.

If self-drive isn’t your thing, you can join family-owned tour company Venture North, which holds the exclusive permits to explore the Cobourg Peninsula. See areas of historic significance including the ruins of an early European colony at Victoria Settlement, join a multi-day tour that includes Kakadu National Park and West Arnhem Land, or jump on a fishing charter and stay at the Cobourg Coastal Camp – known for having Australia’s best ‘Loo with a view’.
